New Double Bay Wharf upgrade opens to public

Giovanni Polimeni, BESIX Watpac General Manager for NSW, commended the project team for the successful and safe delivery of the project.

“Our team collaborated extraordinarily well with our delivery partners to safely coordinate the adjacent Bay Street Road and public domain upgrades, and expertly conducted the marine demolition, structural repairs, piling, and jetty construction, concurrently with fitting out the new pontoon off-site.”

The Double Bay Wharf upgrade introduces a range of features, including a new dual-sided pontoon and connecting gangway, a covered waiting area, and weather-protected seating.

It also improves ferry access for public transport customers, with additional features to allow berthing by recreational and smaller vessels.

These crucial upgrades will make the wharf easier and safer for customers to use, including those with additional mobility requirements, and customers with luggage or prams.

Transport for NSW worked closely with Woollahra Council, who delivered the landside improvements, including footpath upgrades and accessible car parking on Bay Street, and with the Gujaga Foundation to incorporate stories of Country into the wharf design.

Work by Gweagal artist Shane Youngberry is water blasted into the new connecting structure between the jetty and gangway, incorporating themes of meeting place and campsite into the wharf design.

Dr Marjori O’Neil MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Member for Coogee officially opened the new wharf.

“Double Bay Wharf is an iconic part of our beautiful Sydney Harbour and these upgrades will be a great asset for locals and visitors alike to enjoy.

“We want to thank the community for their patience while we completed these crucial upgrades, and we’re thrilled today to get wharf users in Double Bay back out on the harbour.

“These upgrades make taking the ferry at Double Bay easier and safer, future-proofing the wharf to support our growing city.”

The upgraded Double Bay Wharf marks the third successful ferry wharf delivery by BESIX Watpac for Transport for NSW, following the ahead-of-schedule completion of North Sydney Wharf in 2022 and Taronga Zoo Ferry Wharf in August 2023.

BESIX Watpac are now gearing up for the construction of the South Mosman wharf upgrade on the east side of Mosman Bay and the Greenwich Point wharf upgrade at the mouth of the Lane Cove River.
